The Only Star Mentioned in the Koran

The Only Star Mentioned in the Koran

There are billions and billions of stars in the Universe, but only one of them is mentioned by name in the Divine Scripture – the Koran. And yes, it is not the sun, although the sun is also a star. The sun and the moon are mentioned in the Koran as heavenly bodies, but out of all the other stars, only one star has been given such honour.

The Almighty Lord says in the Koran (meaning), “He is the Lord of Sirius.” (Sura An-Najm, ayah 49).

In the past, during the period of pagan ignorance, people worshiped Sirius, giving it sacred significance. For example, the Egyptians revered this star as one of the deities and considered it a relative of the Egyptian rulers, who were also revered as gods. For this purpose, windows were even made in the pyramids so that the deceased pharaoh could contemplate his heavenly brother Sirius through this window.

As-Sa’di, commenting on this ayah, said that this is the famous star Sirius. It was called “Mirzam”. Of course, the Almighty is the Lord of all things. But in this ayah, He especially noted this star, because in the pre-Islamic era, people worshiped it. And here Almighty Allah made it clear that everything that the polytheists worship was created by Him, is in His power and does not deserve worship along with Him.
